The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says that in his letter to Senator Hitchcock, President Wilson reiterated his unqualified opposition to any attempt by the United ‘States to evade her obligation under Article Ton. There, are some Senators, however, who profess to read in President Wilson’s letter a warrant for continuing tho efforts to arrange a compromise on tho Article, hence tho negotiations which have been going on between tho Republicans and the Democrats are being continued. Commenting on the letter, Senator Lodge said he did not know whether the letter would make any difference in the Senate.
Senator Hitchcock said the President pointed out that there was no difference between having no League and attempting to nullify at with reservations Therefore he thought it was better to stay out gracefully rather than enter it disgracefully.
