MORE HOUSES SOON
111 BEING ERECTED. LABOUR DEPARTMENT’S SCHEME. Some relief to the many homeless families and couples who for weeks have sought in vain for houses in and around Wellington, is promised in about three months' time by tho Department of Labour. A total .of 111 houses ai.fhcrised under the department’s housing scheme are at present in*courso of erection, and it is anticipated that same of these will be ready for occupation within the time above-specified, while tho remainder should be available within nine months.
The department is also proceeding with the erection of 71 houses in other parts of tho Dominion, and negotiations are in progress for the erection of a still larger number. ’ Tho latter, to a total of over 100, will be erected in Christchurch, New Plymouth, Timaru, and Palmerston North, and the formal office work in connection with the building operations should bo completed in a couple of weeks. The department is also considering the demands of Master ton, Wanganui and other places where housing accommodation is acutely short. In regard to the. provision of workers’ dwellings, in addition to those already in course of construction, the department is undertaking the purchase of houses for workers where the circumstances warrant such action. LAND TAKEN IN AVELLINGTQN. By an Order-in-Council gazetted yesterday consent is given under the Public AVorks Act to 28 acres of land known as Tinalcori North, and SPJ aero: of section 30, Karori, being taken for tho purpose of workers’ dwellings in the City of Wellington.
