BLENHEIM, February 24. The Warden’s inquiry into an accident which occurred in the Dominion Mine at Wakamarina on December 14th resulting in the death of L. .1. Humphries was commenced at the Blenheim Court. The -magistrate, Mr Rollings, S.M., sat as warden, the assessors being Messrs Thomas Suliivan and M. Fagan. Mr Downie, mine inspector, sought to show that the responsibility lay with the mine manager, who should have insisted on proper timbering at tho rise where the fatality occurred, or barred anyone entering it. Counsel for tho mine manager con-' tended that his client had no authority to control the actions of Humphries. who was practically tho owner of tho mine. The warden said the question was whether there was sufficient evidence to justify the cancellation’ of the mine manager’s certificate. The Inquiry Board deferred decision pending a visit to tho mine.
