PRICE OF LEATHER
INTEREST ATTACHING TO HIDE SALES. Tho fortnightly sales of hides and tallow will be resumed in Wellington on Fridays It is some time since the sales have been held, as it appears that the owners of hides were not inclined to have new Zealand tanners exercising the right of selection at schedule prices, leaving inferior linos to be exported. Finally, hides were held back from the sales, as there wasi no compulsion to.sell. Under the new arrangement. New Zealand tanners will have tho option of exercising first choice of the hides offered at the price of the day, and the broker will determine on what is offered in tho room. The sales will (bo watched with keen interest, as they will, it is expected, give an indication as to what results the.new regulations will have on the price of leather, and consequently bn tho price of boots. The manager of one* Auckland firm stated on Saturday that the Government appeared to have adopted substantially tho regulations obtaining in Australia, but whether they had been adopted in tofo he could not determine. As to the possible effect, it that were the case it was sufficient to say that prices recently ruling in Melliourne showed that light hides, corresponding to what was classed in New Zealand as cow hide*, sold at 23d. Auckland tanners, under the old regulations, were paying lid. If the prices were to alter to that extent it would not be difficult to see what tho result would he on tho price of leather and leather manufacturers.
