When tho s.s. Maheno ivns being cleared for departure from Auckland Detective Gourlcy had his suspicions aroused by the bulkincss of tho. luncheon bags of some watersidors who had bem engaged loading the ship. Ho invited a couplo of tho men to show him tho contents of their bags, and tho discovery led the detectives to suspect thnifc ship's stores woro being taken home. In each of the bags inspected was ten pounds of grapes, while in another were four sheep's tongues, an ox tongue, and. 21b ox cheek, presumably taken from tho fresh stores that had justfc been put on tho Mnlieno. As a consequence threo men, William Bond ("35). Henry T 5. Lhing (27). and George Scynioy/ (12), will conio before the court on Friday to answer charges of theft of ship's stores.
