BURNS, PHILP
DECISION REGARDING ISLAND TRADE. Bv Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright SYDNEY. February 7. Messrs Burns. Philp and Co. have announced that ono steamer will bo dispatched direct to England from the Islands, and others will ho chartered for the Island and Eastern trade. It is pot now likely that tho whole of the Island steamers ot the Burns, Philp Dine will again be put into commission. A previous message stated:—Messrs Burns, Philp and Co. announce that as tho result of tho labour unrest in Australia the company lias decided to build no further steamers at present, but instead will endeavour to send island produce direct to Europe and America by chartered vessels, and to reduce its present Island fleet. To attempt to create a transhipment depot in Australia is now almost impossible under tho existing conditions, i There is also a danger of tho substitution of foreign tonnage for tho Eastern trade, as the Malay States urgently need frozen meat. Tho loss of this trade may bo permanent.
