STRIKES AND BATONS
A RUMOUR DENIED, Eor some days past sensational rumours have been current in Now Zealand that in anticipation of an extensive strike and industrial ’ troubles in New Zealand, many thousands of police batons aro being made, while in the South Island it was reported that tho batons were being made at tho Addington workshops. Tho authorities at the Addington workshops gave tho rumour a flat denial, and now Mr P. Pearce, chairman, and Mr W. H. Jenkins, secretary, of tho Addington branch of tho Amalgamated Society of Railway- Servants, write as follows to papers i—“There a nasty rumour to the effect that police 'batons aro being made at tho Addington railway workshops. Will you be so kind as to say, on behalf of tlio A.5.R.5... that tho rumour is entirely without foundation.”
