VANCOUVER SERVICE
THE TERMINAL PORT. AUCKLAND'S CLAIMS CHAMPIONED. ‘ PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION’. i NAPIER, February 0. 1 What would seem a most- important 1 matter to New Zealand at the present ' time mas discussed with a. ‘ 'HcruM’ representative by Mr J. B. Clarkson, who is well known to business people all ores' Npw Zealand. ■ . , ilx Clarkson pointed out that; the New Zealand Government is paying 430,000 a year to the Union Steamship / Company for the Vancouver, mail route, and that next month it Would be heceSikry lor a renewal of the arrangements Ih connection with the payment of a' subsidy. A point for consideration is the teriHhaU port for/the service. At present Sydney is the port, and Air Clarkson is strongly of opinion f hat it should bo changesUto Auckland in view Cjf the -great -possibility of ships being delayed in 'Australia 6n account of industrial troubles. The faot that Australia contributes nothing to the subsidy is also ‘worthy :of 'consideration, it was considered doubtful by Mr Clarkson that New Zealand' has benefited to the extent of j£3O,CXX) during the past year owing to many delays, and he was df opinion that Australian people wishihg to travel by,„tb© route; should come iteioss to Auckland by intercolonial steamers. By making Auckland the terminal port and provisioning vessels there, tradespeople would no doubt benefit edits jderably. ' ’ '■, ’ln May last Mr Clarkson discussed the matter with Sir Robert Borden tod the Minister for Trade and Qominerco at •'Ottawa, bptlT of whom tm. •trongly in “favoiir Of Auckland btang made the terminal point for the All Red route, and it surely behoves the Government of New Zealand; to review the position.
