BOLSHEVISM
TRADE AS ANTIDOTE ‘ 'MU LLOYD GEORGE'S EFFORTS JUSTIFIED.” ‘•Personally, I believe that Air Lloyd George has been justified in his recent attempts to open up trade relations with Russia,’' stated Air Harold Beauchamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand,- in -an interview with a “Times” reporter. ■‘ T think, so, for the reason that if We can cause these Bolsheviks to transfer their attention from warlike to peaceful activities and develop the resources of that wonderful country, a settlement of the difficulties, with which Russia is now contending would speedily result. There is a magnificent market in'Great Britain for the raw materials which Russia is in a position to supply; and they could he paid for by'manufactured goods exported from Groat Britain to that country. Here, again, as; in the case of our overseas Dominions, there would not ho the same difficulty in regard to exchange that exists between the United 'States and Japan oni the one side and Great Britain and the Dominions cm the other. f‘No doubt, in the action that Japan lias taken in advancing or ottering to advance money to Russia, she is actuated by a. desire to establish, big trace relations with that country. The same 'applies to her .offer to China. In a letter ! recently received from an officer, who was connected with the Intelligence Department and was posted in Russia for nearly two years during the war, he. pointed ;out that, with others, a .number of Americans and Japanese 'wore endeavouring to -open up trade (relations with Russia, <m bbhalf of their irespective. countries, but he 'had not (noted the same activity on the part of the representatives of Great Britain or other European countries.”
