(B "Carbine. 5 ") TH£ FEILDsHG MEETING FIRST SALUTE WINS ST. ANDREW'S HANDICAP. | ACRE SCORES IK THE STAKES. The Feilding spring meeting was opened ou Saturday. and will bo «™***g to-day. Saturday saw a good be B nnnins,. and if tho '-weather is fine to-day a most; successful, gathering , ls as s ur * d '. ._ Rain, fell towards tho end of the-w.**-. aud' on Saturday morning there were ea> > showers, but tho weather cleared befoie tho peoplo reached tho course, and kept fine most of the day. Tho truck «», in nice condition, but the ram had deadened it, and 'slow times were ™oor<lo«. Tho totalisator registered for tho day, against .£31,880 for tho one day last y The racing was particularly interesting, but speculators did not have a good day. Surprises were common, and mo dividends averaged about .£lO. TRIAL PLATE GOES TO WAR BABY. ] The racing opened with the Aorangi Trial Plate, in which tho ruling was do"e by apprentices. The horsemanship was rather poor, and, better handled, several horses would. have been mow prominent. The attractively-bred Festival (by Hallowmas-Crucinella) was made a very warm favourite, and there was good support for Valley Rose, one ot the Solferino family, who showed some pace at Gisbornc. Next in demand camo War Baby, -whose connections were very confident. War Baby was in a good position all tho way. and m end -won comfortably by three lengths from the favourite, who beat Kickapoo by halt a length. Reparoa and Valley Rose were next to finisrt. ANOTHER. CARMONT DIVIDEND. A field of ten moderate hurdlers went dut to contest ifho Waitunn Hack Hurdles, Garryowen, who had been brought from Ellerslie for the race, was made a solid favourite, but gavo hia numerous backers a rather poor run Whiro, who always begins well, was the first to go to the front, but £ervolo f." rdisplaced him and was rushed nalt-a-dozen Jengthe in advance of the held. At the back Of the course Hjiutawa tell, and on tho home turn Vigilo lost: h » rider. Pervolo held her lead for about a mile, when Hushabye and Raenw began to move forward, and Lepanto. go•insr well, improved her position. Uushabve and Whiro were first into the straight, with Lepanto almost in Uno with them. When the trio was straightened no for home Lepanto shot out, was first over the final jump, and[ran oa to win b- three lengths from Whiro, who was iust in front of Hushabye. Jhe winner was an outsider and he paid a ereat nrice—one more big dividend to F J. Carmont's stable. THE BIG HURDLES' SN ATTRACTIVE RACE. The Rangitikei gelding, Yankee Jack, who had been successful oyer shorter courses, was made fa™ mt * 1" t„ n Sprint Hurdles, and Gang Awa , too, cTme in for bhr support. Cheval fell at the first fence. Gang Awa' went to the i £d followed bv Sir Donald. I I Yankee Jack and Maraetotara. Coming 1 to the stand the second time Gang Awa was still in front, and Yankee Jack had 'run up to him. Yankee Jack out-jumped 10an" Awa" at every fence, and threo furiongi from home ho wont to the front and Foofcod likely to win. He led into the straight, and was first over the las. ob=ta~le but Maraetotara came w.th . a »ood run. cut him down, and won by a r-ncth. Old Sir Donald got up In time to "et second ulaee bv a head. Ilia -inner has been eteadUr improving, nnd if proporW handled, she looked sure to run well. The race was a good, one to watch. Mid the finish was of the attrac tive order. JUTLAND DOWNS THE SPRINTERS. Tho whole thirteen acceptors were saddled up for the Flying Stakes. Hymestra. who ha* just returned from Australia, looked welt, and was strongly fancied, but the actual favourite was Demw, who had run good races at tho Nc-w Zealand Cup meeting without actually gotiting or. the winning list. There was a lona delay at tho start, but eventually a. ! good ' release was effected. Hymestra ibe»an fiuartly, hut tho field had only gone a furlomj when Murihiku rushed to tho front. Bonny Briar was lying second when half tho journey had been covered, and Demos was moving up. Murihiku, Birkw/ale and Demos were tho'leading division at ttto turn into the straight, and Jutland could lie soon coming tart on tho outside. Jutland got in front at the distance, and Demos, was unable to make any impression on him.. Jutlandwon by two lengths, and Birkenvale beat Demos on the post for second place. Estkonia was fourth, Bonny Briar fifth,' and Murihiku sixth. BIG HANDICAP GOES TO FIRST SALUTE. Dusky Ere was withdrawn from tho St. Andrew's Handicap, in which thero were eight starters- Marqucteur was favourite. Rose Pink was first to show in front,.and passing the stand Athens 11. ran up to her. Then, all strung out, came Marqucteur, First Salute, W,indorah, Moutoa Ivanova and War Star. With a mile gone Ro.,e Pink and Athens 11. were racing together two lengths in front of Marquetenr and First Salute. Moutoa Tvaaova made a forward move, but did not sustain it. Athena 11. shot to tho front a furlong further on and approaching the straight MoFlinn had him four lengths clear. Ho. turned into tho. straight fir.it, but at tho distance First Salute had taken charge. Firnt Salute looked to bo winning very simply when Snub camo with a late run and passed Marqueteur, and then Athens n., but he would not get up with First Salute, who won by a length and a half. Snub

beat Athens II by a neck for second position. Marqueteur woa close M fourth. Moutoa. lvauova w.n.3 fifth, ami Rose Pink sixth- Windornh was lasi? and War Start was justVaead or mm. A BIG FAVOURITE FAILS IN '•ME' STAKES. Tbt> two-year-oW Denioathonen Ally Teasarcs was an oven-money favourjlo in tho Fourteenth Foilding Stakes even though a field of nine included good sprinters liko Acre, Croesus, Affectation and Ermine. Silver Link was ninong those withdrawn from tho ovonf. ino race was a good one and produced a tine finish. Tho winnor, Acre, was one of the leaders all tho way. At tho bottom «f tho straight he looked as if ho might come away to win comfortably, but .n tho end ho had only half a length to spare from Affectation, who finished very well. Croesus was a nock further away third, and Ermine was fourth. ADMYRA A SMART FILLY. The two concluding events both drew big fields. The Kiwitoa. Welter, which was run over a course of a little more than a mils, was won .by .Rose Quoen, with Arcli Salute in second place. The Fib;roy Hack Handicap was won by the Solt'erino filly Admyra, who defeated her field eo decisively at Trentham.
