Recalls:—Miss Joyce Whitehead. Miss Gwendoline Walton, and Miss Phyllis Martin. EVENIN3 SES3IOM DISCOVERY OF A JUVENILE HARJAY LAUDER, iQuite the feature of the competitions on Saturday was the discovery of a lilliputian vocalist and humorist whom the judge (Mr Harold Gregson, ftf Auckland) highly praised, saying that in his singing of that old but favourite Scotch ditty "Killiecrankie," he had "almost out-Lau. dered Lauder." Truth to tell tho boy. Master James Grieve, of Cfea-istchurcli, is indeed a prodigy. His entrance was made in the most unassuming manner, he displayed no precocity—so common in clever iuveniles probably spoilt by extravagant parental iaudation—his delivery was faultless, his voice true and under splendid control, and his accent perfect. Ho was awarded pride of place in the competition, song in character, boy or girl, 12 to 16 years, and he simply outclassed two clover performers. As showing the sterling morit of his performance he was awarded 210 points out of a possible 250—196 out of 200 points for mng-j ing and 41 out of 50 points for character portrayal and action. In the recall the lad's performance evoked a burst of applause, and the large audience insisted on his reappearance until the stage meiiager (Mr W. P. McLachlan) appeared and explained that encores would only be permitted on demonstration night. Two other items are also deserving of special mention—the beautiful singine of tho Thorndon Marist Bros.' juvenile choir, under Bro. Ehisibius, in their selection. "Canadian .Boat Song" and tho action recitation, "Tho Aspiring Dishwasher." by little Miss Mavis Ritchie, of Christchurch. Tho boys' flute-like voices rang cloar, the parts were admirably taken, and the balance was almost perfect. Miss Ritchie, who by the way, is a sister of the winner in_ the character song class showed histrionic ability of n high order, and her elocutionary effort was greeted with loud and continned applanse.. .... The remainder of the competitions were interesting and entertaining, and the largo audience was delighted. ■ The results of the classes concluded in

tho evening session, together with tho j udge's remarks, as are follow; — PIANO SOLO.—Under 10. "Good Night" (Gade). Miss Stella Bradley (Wellington), 150 points J Miss Rena 11. Couper (Newtown), 147 points 2 Miss Joyce Chisholm (Island Bay), 145 points 3 | The judgo said the performances were pleasing: Thero was somo attempt at pedalling; ho made due allowances for the stature of tho playors in this connection. Thy winner played a rather tiicky piece carefully and intelligently possessing a nice touch and playing with expression. Her fingering was very good. 'lho second prize-winner was n careful player, a little lacking in finish. The third prize-taker's playing was somewhat broken; otherwise a creditable performance. BOY'S SONG—Under Ifi- "Wake Up." Any 1-ey (Montague Phillips). Thomas -George (Wellington), 146 points : \ John "Watters (Thorndon), 135 points 2 Arthur E. Black (Lower Hutt), 128 points ■• ..-....;• 3 Mr Gregson said the winner had given a distinctly pieesing performance. He possessed a. nice voice, his articulation was good, and he sang with a good deal of expression and with close attention to music. The second prize-winner also gave a pleasing performance, but it lacked some of the properties possessed by that of No. 2 (George). GIRL'S SONG—Under 16. Own selection. Miss Nellie Amies (Wn), "Good Night, Trettv Stars." 136 points 1 Miss Dulcie Philpott (Chch), "Roses," 127 points 2 Miss Ira W T olfgang (Wn.), "Joy Bird," 126 pointo 3, The judge, Mr Gregson, said, the winner possessed a nice clear voice which was true, and enabled her performance to bo a thoroughly enjoyable one. Her phrasing was good and there was an attention to detail. This young lady varied much, but sho had evidently improved on her pervious performances. The second prize-winner was also good, but there were faults in the opening bars. The third prize-winner's performance was marred by her taking far too many breaths. JUVENILE CHOIR—Open to any children's choir. Own selection Marist Bros., Thorndon, "Canadian Boat Song," 157 points 1 Taranaki Street Methodist Sunday School, "Home, Boys," 144 points 2 Marist Bros., Newtown, "I saw from the Beach," 142 points 3 This competition was undoubtedly pleasing and interesting. The throq placed combinations were distinctly good and elicited high praise from the judje, who said that a sDecial feature was the balance, which, in the case of No. 2 (Marist Bros., Thorndon, Conductor Bro. Eusibius, who proved to be the winners; it was almost perfect. Referring to the individual penfoTmiwiiees, M.r G' ; 'er«oTi said the feature of the winners' singing was the manner in which the head voices were used. The singing throughout was true to pitch. Their performance was a good deal superior to the others. The TaranaM Sunday School girls (Conductor Mr W. J. Strom) also gave a splendid performance, their enunciation being particularly trood. The third prizewinners' (Conductor Bro. Adrian) principal faults were that there wait a tendency to force the tone, while the seconds were at times too powerful. Otherwise a distinctly meritorious nerformanee. SONG IN CHARACTER (boy or girl, 12 to 16, own .selection). Mas-tor James Grieve (Christchurch), "Killicrankie," 240 points' 1 Mass Rita Arnold (Wellington), "Who'll Buy My Strawberries," 228 points f Miss Winnie Book (Dunedin), "Pierette," 228 points + In the opinion of many this contest brought out tho "discovery" of tho competition iin the person of Master James Grieve, of Christchurch, who convulsed the audience with "Killiecrankie." In announcing the decision the judge (Mr Gregson) said tho maximum was 250 points—2oo for singing and 50 for character impersonation and action. It was difficult to adjudicate between .serious and humorous selections, and he suggested that in future competitions there should be separate classes. As to the performers "Well," >said Mr Gregson. "I must say the boy in kilts fairly captured ras—he was splendid. His accent was perfect, his humour was quaint and effective, his singing was excollent. and his acting—well, he simply "out-Laudered Lauder." (Applause-) Grieve was awarded high marks, 196 and 44. Miss Arnold (187 and 41 marks) was effective, her acting was good, she made a pretty entrance, and sang well, except that her voice was chesty. Mia? Beck JlB5 and 43) was charming, hut her voice was too small. She however, sang with true dramatic feeling, and scored high marks. BASS SOLO, r 'Within these Sacred Bowers" (Qui Sdegno) (Mozart). Mr R. F. Laflorty (Christchurch). 134 points • ■■■■■ 1 The only competitor. Mr Lafferty possesses a nice even voice, fairly powerful, but he mado a bad start and lost several points, in consequence. VOCAL DUET (lady and gentleman). Miss Ida Snelling and Mr II Phipp* (Wellington) "In Springtime," 140

points 1 Miss Je«n Nicholas and Mr Rupert Bennett (Wellington), 130 points ... 2 Tho only competitors. The winners, said the judge, possessed pleasing voices, they had a nice gradation in tone, and with tho exception of two minor faults, their voicco blended throughout most harmoniously. RECITAL WITH MUSIOAL ACCOMPANIMENT (lady or gentleman, 16 and under 21, pathetic or dramatic, own selection). . Miiss Bessie Thomson (Dunedin) Green Eye of the Yellow God," 81 points 1 Miss Fanny Kutner (Wellington) "Mad Carew," 79 points 3 Mr L 11. J. Power (Wellington) "The Yogi's Curse," 77 pointu 3 These were the recalls from Friday. The judge (Mr J. 11. Hopkins) in awarding Miss Thomson pride of placo, said this performer had displayed earnestness and a good deal of "soul' in the recital. The whole performance was distinctly good, the climax excellent, and greatly enhanced tho performer s work. Ho was very pleased with Misg Kutner's work; she had shown considerable improvement, hut had one fault which it would be necessary to restrain, and that was an inclination to become too dramatic. She possessed a good d \1 of dramatic instinct, but should wj overdo it. Mr Power gave evidence of dramatic art, and his voice generally was in keeping with the lines; his attitude was somewhat stiff. ■ ACTION RECITATION, boy or girl, 12 and under 16 (not in costume), own selection. Marks awarded for action. Properties permitted. . Miss Mavis Ritchie (Christchurch), "Tho Aspiring Dishwasher, y 78 points 1 Miss Winnie Beck (Dunedin), A Lesson with a Fan," 76 points ......... A Miss Muriel Freeman (Timaru), ino Parta of my Body/' 74 point« ... 3 Mr nopkins said the winner handled hor subject splendidly; hor action was good and her work most praiseworthy. Miss Beck's work was dainty and neat, but tho selection did not offer the same opportunities as did the others. Miss Freeman was effective, her actions were appropriate, but sho was too serious. The comedietta, "Tho Burglar," was played bv Miss D. Nicholas and W. A. H- Spencer (Wellington).; also n »torj without words~"Romance of » Rnihv»y Journey"—by Missos Gladys M. Gamman and Ella Hutchins (Marton). The children's play, "A Raid on tho Pantry," was plaved by Misses Betty Hoare, Marguerite 'l'hompson, Thelma Adams, I Norma Tonks. and Hazel Davics. The competitions will bo continued at tho Town Hall to-day.
