SATURDAY'S POLICE CASES. Mr E Page, S.M., presided over a sitting of the _ Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. Gilbert Pollock appeared on a charge of insobriety. Sub-Inspector Emerson said the accused appeared to be putting up a record, as die had been before the" court on fivo charges during thepast month. Accused was convicted and fined 30s, in default to be imprisoned for three days. A DANGEROUS PRACTICE. Norman William Copeland, a taxidriver, pleaded guiltyjbo being drunk while- in charge of a. motor-car in Taranaki street. Accused was seen, in Manners stroot outside- Everybody s Theatre in a car in a drunken condition, and was later arrested by Sergeant Bdwards in Taranaki street. The magistrate, in fining Copeland £6, said it was a dangerous practice for a man to be in charge of a motor-car when in a state of intoxication, especially in, the streets of Wellington or Bimilar'cities, where there was heavy traffic. „ A STOLEN BLANKET. James Henry McCann, a fireman on tiro Remuera, denied a charge of stealing a blanket, valued at £2, the property of the New Zealand Government. (Evidence was called to show that a Customs officer saw the accused leaving the Queen's Wharf with something bulky under an oiiskin coat he was wearing, and, being suspicious, Be took ! McCann into an office, whore it was, found that ho was in possession of a j blanket. McCann stated ho was taking the blanket on shore to be washed, and that it had been given to him by a soldier. Chief-Detective Boddam stated that the accused bore a. good character on the ship, and nothing was previous. ly known against him. The man was •sentenced to twonty-one days' imprisonment. LOSS OF PENSION. George Dickson, a Fijian, who had pleaded yailty to stealing an overcoat valued at £5 los, the property of Hope Bros., was brought up for sentence. The magistrate said he had learned that the Pensions Board had power to cancel a pension the accused was receiving -upon his being convicted of an offence. It was a. case, however, in which the court must impose a term of imprisonment, as the theft of overcoats was becoming far too common. The accused would be sentenced to a month in gaol, and a.tf the conclusion of liis term he cc-uld apply for a pension again. A MAN STABBED. Martin McDonough, on a charge ot having assaulted Daniel Cotton so as to cause him actual bodily harm, was remanded till Wednesday. Sub-Inspec-tor' Emerson said that the defendant was alleged to have stabbed the complainant in .. the chest, inflicting a wound an inch long. The offence took place in a boardiughouse the previous evening. Tho injured man was sent to the hospital, but it was not anticipated that any serious' result would follow, from his wound. ALLEGED. TliiiiFT OF GOODS. George Parker AlacDougall, an elderly man, for whom Mi- G. W. Mellish appeared, was called upon to answer a charge of having stolen four rolls of calico valued at ic'2'2 3s 4d, two quilts valued at £5 10s, and three pairs of stockings valued at £2 2s 6d, the property of George and George. The accused, on the application of the police, was remanded till Wednesday, bail being allowed in n. sum of £2OO, with one surety of a like amount.
