A fen- years oaes, ««i Deiuy and Cup wagering was more populai than it now is, a three-year-old w-oulu be sorted out as likely to win tho double, but. dating irom Mamm-Henry s vear (18S3), 13 years elapsed before JNvwliaven broke the spell. The Derby winner, often finished eloso handy to tho winner, however, and on one or two occasions a great performance, though not a "winning one, went down to the crack three-year-old. One of the greatest ta*ks that, the Derbv winner had to take „ n j n the Cup was undoubtedly the race of 1385. Nordenfeldt was required to I meet Sheet Anchor, Grace Darling, and Trenton at a difference of a few pounds, and in a great race lie was beaten less than a length. In 1803 Carnage, who had landed the Derby, led the Cup field Until just inside the distance, when the aged Tarcoola caught hirn, but the Derby winner was onlv defeated by the narrow margin of half' a length. The following statement shows the position occupied by .the Derby winner in the Cup each year since 1576: — 1876—Briscis, 6.4, first. 1878—Wellington, 5.13, fifth. 1879—Suwarrow, 6.1, third. By Teletrrapb—Prcsa Association—Copyright (Received October 31, 9.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 31. Mr W. K. Kemball'g lpam is returning. Ten horse?, including Hymestra, go by tlio Riverina on Mondaj', and soven, including Snub, later.

The Taratahi-Carterton meeting: will be held to-day. Tho acceptances for the Members' Hack Handicap (six furlongs) includes Dainty Step and Demades, both of whom aro engaged in other event.?. If started in this event the pair should run well, but with a little improvement on her recent form Red Signal will take a .'ot of beating. Tho County Cup will not draw a big field, but there should be an interesting race. After ber display at Masterton Lady General may have to be taken somewhat on trust, but tho Wairarapa mare i« sure to be. well supported if sent to the post. She is also in another event. Daytime is a smart perfoYmer, of whom the best has not yet boon seen, and Mntntua is one with excellent credentials. Ho has been racing well for some time and may account for to-day s opposition. The distance Ca mile and a quarter) in (ho Carterton ' Hack Handicap, may trouble .-omo of the runners. Rietui and Momnc may stay on the best, but if Printemps can go the journey he ought to win.

Tho open sprint is to be run over a five-furlong course, and anything that begins .well from the inside Will have a great chance. Saniarang showed a -ot of paco nt Levin.

Pacific Slope will probably ,be made favourite for the Maungaraki Welter. American Beauty will have a big following in the five furlong hack event, but Restful and Demades might trouble her a little. It Sweet Memory wcro at her best the field would find it warm work chasing her. Client and Acre may bo >=ent to Auckland to try and will the Cup and the Railway Handicap. Present indications point to a field of about half a dozen contesting the New Zealand Derby. The defection of Warplane will be regretted, as he represented cop form at tho end of last season. On his running this season Affectation appears to be'the btvt of his ago, but- Royal Stag has created a favourable impression, while Rossini was a winner in Australia and ran well at Trenthaui. The field for tho Welcome Stakes may be smaller this year than is usually the eaoe, all the indications pointing to a reduced number of competitors. Gay Lad, the Cup favourite, has been nominated for the Spring Plate, one mile,' to be run on Cup day. . Inah is reported to be doing great work on the llawera track, in view of the Stewards' Handicap, but, brilliant as she is over live furlongs, it is questionable whether she will rifn out the rix furlongs. A. McCormack will ride War Star in the New Zealand Cup. A Press Association message from Auckland states that Mr W. Walters, owner of tho Glonora Park stud, died yesterday. Mr Walters had been in illhealth for some timo.
