NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Carbine.”) There will be racing at Otaki to-mor-row and on Monday. The Birch wood meeting 13 set down for Monday, the Geraldine meeting for the 25th and the 26th, and Wanganui meeting for the 25th and the 27th.

Hawke's Bay, Napier Park, and Dunedin nominations are duo this evening. For the Wellington Spring meeting nominations are due next Fridav, and entries for certain future Wellington events will bo taken at the same time. Masterton nominations close next Friday.

Geraldine acceptances are duo to-mor-rov,- and Kurow acoeptanoeo on Monday. It is understood that A. J. McFlinn will have the mount on Detroit in the big race at Otaki. This horse will be hard to boat if the going is soft. Motuibi is unlikely to bo started at Otaki although its prospects in the Maiden looked bright. Ten thrce-year-olda still remain in the New Zealand Cup. Indigo, which deadheated with Warstep in 1914. was the last of the ago to be successful, and previous to that a three-yoar-old had not succeeded in winning since Noctuiform in 1903.

The Waifcanae Stud reports the following loadings;— Merry Margaret, b o-(since dead) to Kilboy; Peace, b o to Boniform; Bebe. b f to Boniform; Margaretho, b c to Boniform; Mistime, b f to Boniform: Lady Jean 11. (imp.), b f to Boniform; Desrina (imp.), b f to Boniform.; Glen Helen, b f to Boniform; Snowlike, b c to Bezonian; Lady Stewart, oh f to Solferino; Paphia, b e to Martian; r.nd Vicereine, b c to Boniform.

Though Manawapango has not done much work since the Grand National meeting, ho is more forward than most of the other horses he is likely to meet in the hurdle race at Geraldine. Sir James Carroll, patron of the Otaki Club, intends motoring out to-morrow to see the racing. Sir James is a keen supporter of the only Maori Racing Club there is.

Yolo, who goes well on the Otaki course, has not been nominated for the coming meeting, but may be seen out at Wanganui.. The English-bred Arrowsmith, who was imported to Auckland some few months back, is in steady work at Ellerslie, and, all going well, it is said that he may be expected to make his debut. under silk when tbs A.R.C. spring meeting rolls round in November. Some few months back the Victorian, breeder, Mr C. Chafiey, purchased the Stepniak-Demeter mare Pedometer from Mr G. L. Stead. Pedometer was in foal to Nassau when sold, and news is now to hand that-the produce is a colt. Pedometer is the dam of the speedy Surveyor, and the new arrival is a full brother to the colt in question. Rose Pink, for whom there will be good support at Otaki. started in thirtyfour races last season. film won four races, got five seconds, and six thirds. Though the history of the Caulfield Cup reveals that only on two occasions has a horse succeeded \in winning that race carrying 9st or over. Gloaming (9.4) is claiming some attention; and one of the leading Melbourne writers ’ singles The Welkin’s son out. for special reference. Tweaty-five. year* back Paris won the Caulfield Cup under 9.4; and in the race of 1907 Poseidon carried 9.3 to victory.

Several times it looked certain that Golden Glow would have to be retired from the turf, but the veteran keeps going, and is evidently standing up to his work all right, for ho figures among the nominations for the Mount Albert Steeplechase to be run at Avondale J.C. Spring meeting. The finish of the chief flat event at the Pakuranga meeting waa a good one. and in view of coming events the "Star’s” description is interesting:—Tabasco was first out, but with a couple of furlongs covered Moltcbikoff took charge. and Tabasco stopping suddenly going through the cutting, the former was well clear, crossing the top with Paddington Green, Depredation, Fabriquette, and Wa-iuta, handy. Depredation ran up to Meltchlkoff m the straight, and looked like coming away, but the Mcnschikoi! gelding hung on to his task in fine stylo, anil was disputing every inch of the ground with the Auckland Cup winner, when Waiuta and Fabriquette joined in. and a great finish saw the. quartet cross the line in n bunob, Fabriquette getting the decision bv a head from Wainta, with Meltehikoff a neck away, a head in front of Depredation, while Killard, which finshed well, was close up.
