THE INDIAN RISING
A SERIOUS EPISODE DISTURBANCES QUELLED WITH GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Australian ami NX. Cable Association. LONDON, May 16. Reports from India show that the recent rising was serious. It was well organised, and the moderation ot the authorities at Delhi encouraged the mob to extreme violence at Lahore and Amritsar, where several whites were killed. At both places the military was compelled to use severe repressive measures, ’ and the great mob was overawed. In one quarter in Amritsar machine-guns wore played on them. The Gurkhas could not be restrained, and a thousand lives were lost. There was equally severe repression at Lahore, where it is believed four thousand were killed or wounded altogether. This energy was not expected by the leaders, and the difficulty simmered down.
