A CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT.

'J.he waterfront presented an animated appearance yesterday- morning, when many of tne vessels in port were busily engaged in working cargo. A» was to be expected, there was no great shortage of waterside labour, otherwise more vessels would have been worked, as nearly all boats have'been declared clean. All steamers arriving at Wellington from Westport.and.Greymouth must remain in the stream on arrival until passed bv the Port Health Omcer. The vessels are then permitted to berth. The'port of 'Grevmouth is issuing a clean bill, of health to those boats which are aiiite free from influenza, and have been properly fumigated. •■- This procedure-'facilitates matters for the Port.-Health ■ Officer at Wellington, wno immediately, grants pratique on presentation of the document providing all-members of the -crew are<well. ■ - '• - ■----■- ' The Mararoa on arrival alongside the ferry berth here from Lvttelton is first inspected by the Port Health Officer before anv communication is permitted between tho vessel and tne shore. The Mararoa is thoroughly fumigated at both Wellington and Lyttelton between each trio. The Monowai. which has been detained at Wellington'during the epidemic, is to sail this afternoon for Lyttelton takim/ " soldiers onlv'. The ' vessel will subsequentlv assist the Mararoa in the "ferry" service! leaving Lyttelton on Thursday evening foe, VY_elJington. The .scow Magic and small steamer Wakatu left Wellington yesterday, tho former for Nelson and the latter for Kaikoura'and Lvttelton. A number of other boats'wili resume funning today. The difficulty in obtaining crows is ' detaining the Mapourika from reentering the Wellington-Picton-Nelson service, and has necessitated tho mdefmitc postponement of the departure of the lvomata with passengers for Westport.
