Tired, sick; ' in trouble, or entertaining a friend, there .was not a corner whore one could be alone day or night. Since the duos were opened, all this is changed. At - sixteen 'base hospitals now there are attractively furnished social rooms whore the nurses may •spend the few hours they are off duty. Six more hospitals have asked for those privileges.' A very enjoyable evening was -provided for the sailors.in port-by..,the Rev. Air . .'Reid anil party from ( ljhe LyallBay Afe.thodist, Church, at. the Sailors’ Host, Queen.’s Chambers. - Post Office square, on Saturday night.. Various parlour games' -wore, indulged in, as well as song and recitation, and the singing of wollj-known hymns. Light refreshments .were handed round, and before a delightful .evening’s enjoyment had been ’. brought to a- close the Rev. -Air. Reid and Air D. AlcCallum, president of the society, gave the departing sailors some good and wholesome words of advice. . Arrangements .are being made to have other social evenings at frequent intervals for the benefit of sailors visiting'the port.'-■ : '

NAVAL DEPENDENTS’ RELIEF,

■The -following., report- was "read ;by Airs .Waters,.of the work, at -the depot on Jervois quay, at tho meeting on Friday night; This branch of work was resumed a .few weeks ago in the promises on Jcrvois quay, used, last year for the' same purpose; and' kindly lent' by tho Wellington Naval Association. Grants of £2O from' the general committee, and £3 from tho Ladies’ Auxiliary. as well,ns .a. donation of , £5, fromLady Stout, have • provided material, principally .flannelette, for cutting into .-garments to be sewn by girls of the State schools. About- 300 garments 'have been .-asked lor, and toLdnte 187 have been;given-’out. - • '

Two cases of clothing have been dispatched 1 for transport to England, and two more;'are ready. The cases sent contained '’■ 145 garments, and were valued at £2l 10s 7d. Properties have been loaned by ,the St. John Ambulance Association ‘ and tho Singer Company, while gifts have been made by the D.1.C., Wellington Box Company, Alessrs B. W. Alills and Co., and Alessrs Bethuno and Co. The boys of tho carpentry class, under Air Alexander Graham, instructor . at-. the Technical School, fitted up, cupboards, and tho Colonial - Carrying - Company kindly convoy goods free of charge. The committee appreciate these many, kindnesses. The cash receipts were £3O 2s, the whole of which has been spent on flannelette, cotton, etc.— Letters of thanks and appreciation, have been received from* many parts of England, s\’hore our last, year’s'clothing was distributed. Copies of these . letters -were made and forwarded to supporters in city and country. • The Royal Naval Friendly Union of Sailors’ Wives, London, of. which Lady Drury, wife of Admiral Drury,' is hon. secretary, will receive much of the' clothing being sent.
