THE TARANAKI SEAT
BY-ELECTION ON OCTOBER 10th. Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 27. The writ for the Taranaki by-elec-tion was received to-day. Nominations of candidates close on September 30th, and the poll is fixed for October 10th. The_ only -candidates now in the field are Mr J. S. Connett, chairman of the County Council, who is the selected National Government candidate, and Mr. Sydney Smith, son of the late Mr. E. M. Smith (ex-member,for Taranaki), •who stands as a Democrat, .and is baoked by the local Labour organisations. Mr P. Fitzherbert, who announced his candidature ou behalf of Labour, has retired, and become Mr Smith's chair- [ man of committee.
