ST. MARY’S BAZAAR

EFFOET FOB REBUILDING FUND. lor weeks past the Roman ■ Catholic community in vVellington haw been busy preparing for.- the big- bazaar which is to help raise funds for the rebuilding of St. Mary's,Church-in Boultott street, which w r as burned in May last. The first Catholic, church in Wellington was built, on the Boulcott street site in 1843, and dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels- This was replaced', in 1874 by the church which was - so recently destroyed, and ever the necessity of rebuilding it has been before the people of the parish. This was explained' by Father Mahoney last night to those who attended at the Town Hall, when welcoming tho Countess of Liverpool, ;who .performed the opening ceremony. As soon -as tho fire took place,; he said, a meeting "had been held with very good results, and it was then suggested that .a bazaar' would , help the fund.- ; A ■■ number of ladies volunteered to make-thb necessary preparations, and nothing had been left untried to make the fete a success. Although only a little oyer three months’ time had - been available, - great seal, energy, and enthusiasm hod been . brought to the ; work, and the results were a groat number of beautiful articles on tho stalls. He thanked Lady Liverpool for attending. - also the Mayoress for. sparing -time to come ta them. They were grateful' to allwho had helped, ©specially l to Mr' Malini, who was- giving his services nightly, tha dancing. teachers who' were putting on programmes, and ; the musicians who were assisting. Lady, Liverpool, who was attended by Lieutenant Garland. A.D.C., briefly expressed her -pleasure at being able to associate herself with the function and her sympathy with the cause and wished the ■ bazaar mrerr : snooceg. These were all arranged under the galleries, leaving a blear space in tha centre of the hall. At.either, end-of tho hull large-flags were-hung and f°r the rest, the stalls'themselves formed the decoration. These were all done in different "colours. -The hostel, stall was yellow and--white and was in charge ;of Sire I). P. Healy.. blisses M- Keating, and A. C. Kennedy. ' This stall ' hiid some dainty articles, camisoles, a pink crepe-de-chihe blouse, a Prettily _ cmbroid.ered baby’s set.’ embroidered nightgowns, pyjamas and other useful goods. There were several raffles.' including a chesterfield.. a,nd the cookery’ for s«il©. Here ■ also was ‘s. Oliristnisi tree of balloons and ( a bran tubxfor tlw children. Tha Hiborniajx stall wma aB white with ftreen lattice work- , I* charge were Hesdamcs -D. - Dalton, ’ R. Dwyer, and Miss ,K.- Whelan. Here also were some useful goods for sale, especially' blouses and lingerie, and some good raffles, a Morris chair and a fur coat, which should find, many enthusiasts. The Brooklyn stall was a fruit mart,and was gay with. Oriental colours, in charge’ being Meadames Carney, Rafter and Tasker. , _ The Altar Society Stall was dr*?* 4 in red, white, and blue, and hero also were-many pretty things. .Two sbaux sots were being raffled, a goW nugget, * ohain; and there was much pretty fancy work crochet wor », etc. In charge were MesdamosP- J. An annexe of this stall was a depot-for several raffles;.’ also behind -the stag® one'side had been partitioned off ■ anq arranged, with flogs, ..and here .Mr Malini gave an. exhibition of his marvellous art. Ho is to r a short programme every might. The stage was arranged for dancing,* and Miss Beore put on several of her clever pupils in .a programme of fancy dances. An orchestra, under Mrs Chapmen, also provided .• selections during ths evening. Those' entertainments ar® to bc given nightly,-a'' stage committee. consisting of Messrs T. O'Brien and J. D. McPheo being in charge. To-night pupils of Miss Saunders - will dance, and the Natives’ Association Band will give selections, while there will be a Highland fling competition for boys and girls under eleven. There wa s a; very large attendance ' for tho opening last night, the gallery being fairly full, as well, as the floor crowded, and the selling of raffi® tickets was , going on at a brisk rate.
