PURCHASE OF A MOTOR LORRY. The monthly meeting of tho ITut.t County Council wati held yesterday. There' were present—Councillors J. 'Whiteman (chairman). P. l>vanagh, W. Galloway, J. C. Cooper, M. W. Welch, and VV. j. Howell. It 'was decided to apply to the Government for permission to divert a grant of .650 for the I’litoiau to I’aekahariki road to the Moonshine to Upper Hutt road. Uu the suggestion of the New Zealand Fanners’ Union it was resolved to placo finger posts on the roads throughout tho country for the convenience of travellers. An effort is to bo made to induce tho education authorities to rebuild the public school at Prhautanui, as the present building is falling to pieces with ago. Permission was given tho residents ot Packaknriki to construct a lavatory fer tho convenience of the public, and a grant of .£lO from tho riding account was authorised to bo donated towards tho cost. The overseer of works (Mr .T. W. Cadliy) reported that the reforming end metalling of roads and footpaths had oeen Undertaken during the past month. An inspection of the bridges had been made by the Public Works engineer, and a report was to be submitted on thoir condition. A metal quarry on tho Gorgo road was being opened up, and gave promise of good metal being obtained. A motion by Councillor Galloway— That tho resolution to purchase a White fiiimri motor be rescinded," caused considerable discussion. A trial of the motor lorry—a secondhand one — had taken jilnco at Taita, when all the councillors were present with the exception of Councillor Galloway. Each councillor, however, had seen the vehicle. Councillors Howell end Cooper, after a special meeting of the council, at which ail the members vero present, interviewed the owners, and arrangements were completed for tho purchase of the lorry for LOGO. Councillor Galloway said tho vehicle was not suitable for the work required of it. ami contended that Councillors Howell and Cooper had no authority from the council to como to arrangements respecting tho purchase. After a heated discussion, into which personalities entered, the motion was lost on tho casting vote of the chairman.
