Crow, engineer and chemist to the Wanganui Rcstar Company, Ltd., and ho reports having separated the crude oil into three fractions or oils, a benzine, a paint on, and a lubricating oil, with a residue of JU per cent, pitch- The commercial nature of these oils he places at 2s 6d, ds, and 4s per gallon, making the value ot the crude oil 2s 6d per gallon. The amount of oil obtained by the •company’s process varies from /o to 150 gallons per ton of material treated, and the cost of treatment will not exceed fourpence per gallon. The material from which the oil is obtained is valued at present for the gum it contains at 20s per ton, but if used for oil production its value will be not less than £9 per ton. Hr Alder ton estimates that an acre of the right gum swamp will yield 100,000 gallons of oil, worth from £IO,OOO to £12,000, and as his coinpany owns from 8000 to 10,000 acres of swamp land, steps are to be taken at once to develop the industry, : *
