NAVY LEAGUE CONCERT
THE WELLINGTON AMATEUR ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. Except on occasional Sunday evenings, Wellington is not often regaled with orchestral music nowadays, bo that the resuscitation of the Amateur Orchestral Society to give a concert in aid of tho Navy League Fund in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last nignt was a matter of some musical interest. Mr H.-H. Tombs acted as* conductor on tho occasion. * • It was a very creditable programme of selections .that was put forward. The opening number was Schubert's particularly graceful and exhilarating overture, "Hosamunde," which was much enjoyed. The ne.ct orchestral piece was Beethoven's First Symphony in C major—an invigorating composition, with a particularly dainty 'andante cantabilo." A little more expression and a slower tempo would r«».ve fitjevj m-•nupruvrtmenV di» ,'bhis movement. The, English rural suite, "Woodland Pictures," by Percy Fletobor, rather took tho fancy of the audience. Tho suite comprises three movements, founded on imitations of folk songs and Old Country dance tunes. These are entitled "In the Hayflelds," "An Old World Garden," and "The Boa* Feast." Afterwards came Nos- \ 1 and 2 of Schubert's "Hosamunde" Ballet, Finally, the orchestra performed ..in good style throe-bracketed numbers—"Voyagour" (Paderewski), the Intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rustioana" (Mascagni) and "Naila" (Delibes). The vocal selections which were interspersed were decidedly good. Miss Hazel Fuller contributed most tastefully "Love is a Bird" (Terisa del Riego) and "Despair" (Bemberg), a Hindoo song. AVith creditable facility Mr Len. Barnes gave "0 Ruddier thin the Oherry," from Handel's "Acis and Galatea"; also Damroeh's "Danny Deever," to the words of Rudyard I Kipling. Both singers were encored. Mrs H. V. Morgan and _ Mr Frank Thomas acted as accompanists.
