At the last meeting of the Southland War Funds Association it was decided to bring under the notice of the Discharged Soldiers’ Information Department the advisability of some arrangement being made to provide training for returned soldiers in farming pursuits on lines similar to the scheme non- in voguo for the training of returned men in -workshops, factories, otc.,_ a scheme which is worked on the subsidised wages method. A reply has now been recoircd from the department to the effect that the Government will bo prepared to subsidise soldiers’ earnings in all ■ industries, provided the training is carried on under conditions and with an employer approved by the department. Tlie idea of the cormpitteo is that where a soldier desires to go on the land in the employ of an experienced farmer, in order to receive the benefit of training, a committee consisting of a member of the Efficiency Hoard, a member of. the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the employing farmer should bo set up to determine what wage should be paid to the man by the farmer; Having arrived at the decision in this matter, the result is to be communicated to the Government Department for tho purpose of enabling it to determine whether it will agree to subsidise the wage of the soldier to bring it up to tho weekly minimum rate for competent farm workers for a full ordinary week.
