COMPARATIVE STATEMENT BATES OF PAY AND ALLOWANCES. The Minister for Defence (Sir James Allen) has furnished -the following com. paxison of tho rates of pay and allowances in respect of a private soldier in the British Army, the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the Australian Imperial Force, and the New Zealand Expeditionary—l’orcc

The children’s allowance in New Zealand has recently been increased from 7s to IDs 6d per week, and be: for prevision made for widowed mothers and other dependents of the soldier. Other separation allowances are provided for-in New Zealand as lollow; WIDOWED MOTHER’S ALLOWANCE. A widowed mother dependent on the soldier, if her total income apart from allotment does not exceed 15s per week, or if her capital does not exceed AoOj, U entitled to an allowance of 10s 6d per week. The practice is to consider the widowed mother eligible for the allowance if she has one soldier son, or if she has one single son and one or more married sons. If she has two single sons it is considered that the sons ought to bo able to provide for their motaor bv allotments. The income which debars the widowed mother from receiving the allowance has been raised quite recently from 10s to 15s per week. This rise makes a widowed mother in receipt of full old age pension, and the war bonus eligible for the allowance. It is also opening the dpor to widowed mothers who have incomes of 15s per week and meets the case of widowed mothers who were in receipt of widows’ pension on account of their children. The capital which the widowed mother may possess has been increased from JJ2SO to .£SOO. thus removing a limitation which prevented some from claiming the allowance. Tho position of tha widowed mother will be: — Allotment, say 31/- per week Old age pension, if in receipt thereof or with other income 15/.
