PRICE OF BREAD IN TAIHAPE

To the Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir, —I will ask you to kindly grant me the space in your valuable paper and publish this letter dealing with excess profits that the Taihapo bakers are making out of the latest rise in flour, re IDs per ton. There are over 550 4lb loaves baked from one ton of flour. Our bakers have raised the price of the .41b loaf one penny per loaf. The price is now elevenpence at counter and one shilling from cart for cash. One penny per loaf on 650 loaves is £3 6s lOd. After deducting the 10s rise on the one ton of flour from the amount received from the sale of | the amount of bread baked from this one ton at an advance of one penny per loaf leaves the baker an excess profit of £1 15 s lOd. Had the flour been raised £2 per ton the one penny rise on the 41b loaf would have been ample to have met the rise, and would have left a profit of 5s lOd on the rase just taken place in flour. There are i Gaily over 600 loaves baked from one ton of flour without the potatoes added. However, X have given the baker the benefit of about fifty loaves. X hope the chairman of the Board of Trade will read this letter, and force the Taihape bakery down three farthmgs per 41b loaf. Of course, there is no profiteering going on, becauso the chairman of the Board of but JT Ho J<^ P}l Ward sa y a sop put d. X. Davey, the navw, says there is, and he has substantiated the fact.— i anij etc.* J. T. DAVEY.
