OTAEI. ironday... Very heavy rain, fell in the district last night—an inch and a quarter in a few hours. The Manakau Telephone Exchange was opened to-day with fourteen subscribers.. The Rnngiuru Knitting Club’s shop to, raise funds for soldiers was very successful on Saturday, and a substantial 1, sum was secured. The Family Hotel at Otaki has changed hands, Mr Hume, of Wellington, being the new owner. Mr K Pearcy takes the Apiti Hotel, and leaves Otaki on Monday. Sergeant A. 31. Budkin has been awarded the Military Medal. Previous to enlisting he was on the staff of the Otaki State School. Ho is now lying ill. the result of a severe wound. The clothes’ lino thief is busy in Otaki and many clothes have disappeared lately. Mr W. Bassett, an ox-Greytown fire brigadesman, has been appointed captain of the newly-formed brigade at Otaki. Mr A. 11. Hill, who has had experience under Captain Hugo, has been appointed lieutenant.
