UNREST IN FIJI

NATIVES PUNISHED FOR SEDITION. Press AssociationAUCKLAND, April 29. Sentences of imprisonment for terms ranging from one to eighteen months have been passed on fifteen or sixteen Fijian natives arrested on chargee of seditious utterances. For some time past there has been apparent a slight spirit of unrest amongst the natives, particularly those of the hill districts.

Tlio principal offender was Sailosi, a man of about sixty years of ago. He circulated statements to the effect that the King of England had abdicated, and been succeeded by the Kaiser, that the present local rulers representing Britain had been deposed, and that no more taxes wore to bo imposed. According to Sailosi, a new religion, known as “Number Eight,” was to be established, this title being derived from the fact that it followed the Seventh Day Adventists’ doctrines. The main feature of the new religion was Saturday and Sunday days of rest. The disaffection aroused appears to have ceased.
