AT THE FRONT

RECENT CASUALTIES SERGEANT K. COLE. News has been received, of the death of Sergeant Kenneth Colo, killed in action. When war broke out he enlisted ■with the first Expeditionary Force for Samoa. After being there for nine months, he again emisted, finally going away with the loth Artillery Reinforcements. On October 13th ho was wounded, and for gallantry displayed on that date was awarded the Military Modal. Ho was a keen yachtsman, and was highly esteemed by all who know him. Up to tho time of his enlistment he was an employee of Chas. Bigg and Co. SERGEANT A. E. WIXON. Sergeant Arthur Edmund Wixon (Croix de Guerre), son of Mr A. Wixon, Pipitea street, has been reported as having been wounded in the head. Sergeant Wixon, went to Samoa with the first contingent, and after returning to New Zealand he embarked with the sth Reinforcements. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre for gallantry in tho field. He was educated at the Hutt High School, and was in the employ of the H.B. Clothing Company. For a long time he had been a member of the D Battery. His brother. Sergeant L. H. Wixon, is at present attached to the Rifle Brigade, Kith Reinforcements. CAPTAIN A. D. ALEXANDER. Word has been received by Mrs F. Alexander that her husband. Captain Alexander, Auckland Infantry Regiment, has, been severely wounded in the left arm and eye, and is at present in a military hospital. Captain Alexander went away as a second lieutenant with tho Main Body, and ■ saw service in Egypt and Gallipoli, and was present at die landing. Later he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and after the Somme engagement he was made a captain. Ho was born in Outram, Otago, Jand was educated at the Outram and : the Mornington schools. For some time he was employed by Messrs Wren and Co., Dunedin, but later took up Territorial work and was at one time staff-sergeant-major at Riverton, Southland. Previous to his enlistment has was in the empoy of Messrs R. Martin and Co.. Wellington. Captain Alexander married the youngest daughter of the late Joseph Garsibe, engineer and brassfounder, Dunedin. He has a brother. Sergeant A. Alexander, 2nd Battalion, Rifle ■ Brigade, who is on active service in France. Second Lieutenant D. W. Alexander, another brother, who has returned recently from the front, is now at Trentham. A third brother, David Alexander, proceeds shortly to camp. RIFLEMAN A. HAYCOCK. Rifleman Arthur Haycock (son of Mrs Haycock, of Church street, Feilding), who was killed in action on April sth, was well known in the Eewa and Pakihikura district, where ho was farming before going out with the Liverpool’s Own. He w r as wounded in the Somme battle last year, spent some time in hospital in England, and was killed in 'the latest offensive.
