THE MISSING AURORA

Sir Douglas Mawson, apparently, was not aware that the missing Aurora was so badly strained by the buffeting of the ice that when in. Sydney prior to departure on her last voyage the vessel had to have, a bad leak in the bows repaired. London advices state that Sir Douglas Mawson, referring in an Interview to the statement that the Aurora (which has since been posted “missing” by Lloyd’s) has disappeared in southern waters, said;—“lf the Aurora is lost it must be due to a submarine attack. She proved her seaworthiness by navigating 30,000 miles in the foulest weather, during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. She was the_ finest boat afloat for Polar exploration work.”

Mr G. H. Scales, of Wellington, whose son-in-law. Captain Reeves, was in command of the Aurora when she sailed on her last voyage, has abandoned all hope for the safety of the vessel or the crew.
