At the Trade> Union Congress at Blackpool Mr Hill, of the Boilermakers’ Union, in his presidential address said that the evidence given at the recent industrial Commission showed that labour unrest was due to the Government breaking its pledges in regard to industrial conscription by compelling men to accept unfair conditions under fear of enlistment. The workers were convinced that the high prices of food were due to unchecked gambling by middlemen. The workers had agreed that Belgium, Poland, Alsace and the Trentino must all be assured of full justice. He asked, could this be accomplished militarily? Already, he said, nine million men had been killed. He condemned the denial of the right of the Allied democracy to meet the peoples of all countries for the propagation and establishment of a world democracy. He concluded by. affirming that the trades unions endorsed the aims of the Allies. The Congress recommended that attempts be made to secure an agreement of the working classes of the Allies as to the fundamental condition of a successful International Conference.
