William waters, who had been before the i court on several occasions tor insobriety, was convicted ana lined £5, in default to serve fourteen days in gaol, lor a similar offence, Jonn Samuel, wfio stated that fie had been discnarged from camp tne previous day as physically unfit, was fined A2, and given tne alternative of spending seven days in prison. William Dolan, w.no was not unknown to the police, pleaded guilty to tne theft of a quantity'of tobacco, valued at -E6 8s 9d, the property of Joseph Nathan and Co., .Ltd. Inspector Marsack said that on August 24th the firm sent their delivery van out with a load of tobacconists’ goods for delivery to a number of tobacconists. While the man in charge was in a tobacconist shop, the accused took the tobacco off the van, and later wai found attempting to dispose of it to a tobacconist. He was sent to gaol for three months. Axel Martin Person, a Swede, 19 years of age, for whom Mr H; H. Cornish appeared. was called upon to answer a charge of stealing a quantity of goods, including playing-cards, books, stationery, mathematical instruments, ink. and hair brushes,, valued at -£7- Is 4d. the property of Collins Brothers and Company, Ltd. Mr Cornish said the defendant. who spoke indifferent English, admitted taking some of the. goods. The books he took home to read in order that he might improve his English- Some of the articles he is charged with stealing were bedroom ornaments, which defendant (who came out to New Zealand with £200) claimed he bought at Auckland. Chief-Detective Boddam said he understood that a nlea of not guilty was to be entered, and he would apply for a remand for a week in order that inquiries might be made concerning th« accused.
