DEATH OF BRIGADIER-GENERAL JOHNSTON. RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m., the Acting Speaker (tho Hon. W. C. F. Cameron) in the chair. BJXti PASSED IN COMMITTEE. The Hon. 0. Samuel reported that the Committee of Private Bills had passed tho Wanganui Church Acre Bid without ■amendment. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. On tho motion of Sir Francis Bell leave of absence for tho remainder of tha session was granted to the Hon. Sir Charles ivr.ven. K.C.M.G., on account of illness. RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY. The Hon. 0. Samuel moved a resolu'ion of sympathy atid condolence to the Speaker, the Hon. C. J. Johnston, and Jins Johnston in the loss at the front of their son Brigadier-General Johndlon, ■cord of whose death was received last week. Mr Samuel said that Mr and Mrs Johnston had indeed suffered severe, ly in the toll of war, having had throe bereavements since the beginning of the war. Their names wore enrolled in tho imperishable enroll fame of those whose lives were given in tho service of the Empire- It might be .some eon. eolation to the parents of deceased to know that the sincere sympathy of the Council was with them :n the loss of a son who fell gallantly fighting for his country. The Hon. W. D. H. Baillie, in eecondIrg the resolution, referred feelingly to the deceased soldier's flue qualities. The resolution was carriedTRADE AND COMMERCE BILL. Sir Francis Ball asked the Council to pass as a matter of urgency tho Eegulaition of Trade and Commerce Amendment Bill. Tho Bill was put through all Its stages and carried. Tie Council rose at 3 p.m. and adjourned until 2.30 p.m. to-day.
