MILITARY APPEALS
YESTERDAY’S OASES. The Third Military Service Board continued its sittings yesterday. Mr H. J. Beswiek'presided, and had with him Messrs A. O’L. Considjne and M. J. Mack, and Captain Baldwin. Mr M. J. Reardon, secretary of the Slaughtermen’s Union,- appealed on behalf of the -following slaughtermen:— B. Burgess (Fairfield), R. E. McCracken (Wairoa), Charles Moilion (Bluff), J. A. Childs (Balclutha), and L. Dunwoodie (Oamaru). The cases were ad T joui-ned sine die, on the' iisual conditions. Mr Reardon also appeared jn support of an appeal on, behalf of J. j. Xi. Murray, freezing works-labour-er. Leave until August 22nd was grants ed. , • Mr W. T. Young, secretary of the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union, appeared iu support of .the appeals; of the following able seamen :■—Andrew Moar (Wellington), M. ■ McNeill (Wellington), C. R. Lynch (Auckland). John Peterson (Wellington)., J. Robertson (Wellington), G. T. Nation (Wellington), G. Hendry (Nelson), J.. Miller (Wellington), and T. S. Cockburn (Wellington). Similar appeals wore lodged in respect of the following-firemen; —J. W. T. Laming (Lyttelton), •W. . Licrhtob (Napier), C. Lammas' (Wellington), R. Lavelle (Wellington), E. Winstanley (Lyttelton), S. Wells (Wellington). J. Maskill (Wellington), J. Lowe (Napier), u. Greehbanks (Wellington). A. Fox (Wellington), A. Coburn (Wellington), J. Eade (Wellington), J.. Scholes (now at Capetown), and J: Doyle (Wellington).The cases were adjourned indefinitely on tlie usual conditions. The Commissioner of Police, Mr John O’Donovan; asked for exemption for the following ■ constables:—E. A. Brennan, S. Small, G. A. Baskin, and J. C. Dromgool (Wollingtod); P. O’Sullivan, J. J. O’Gorman, and M. 'O’Sullivan (Auckland).; and B. McGilligan (Wanganui). Appeal was also lodged iu the case of Detective S. G. Hill (Dunedin). Adjournments were granted indefinitely. -
, In tlio case of D. A. McLeod, shearer, and station hand, a personal appeal was lodged; also an appeal by the secretary of his union. Mr C. Graypdler. It was pointed out by the board that the fanners of the country had said that they did not want shearers exempted, and also that the production of men found medically Unfit would be quite sufficient to carry on tho shearing of tho country. The Nationc.l Efficiency Board had reported that shearing was not an essential industry. Mr Grayndler said, that there were now very few competent shearers in New Zealand, and employers were making inquiries for' men in Australia. Further hearing was adjourned until Friday week, pending the reconsideration of some cases by the No. 1 Board. Further leave , till August 32nd. was granted in the case, of H, J. Hall, storekeeper, Kaiwarra. Mr Scott appeared for: appellant. . ■/, John 0. Hogan, clerk. Public Trust office, was granted leave until October 7th. ■
