THE CENSUS

FACTS AND FIGURES MOVEMENT OF POPULATION

Some interesting facts and figure') are contained in the Census Report for 1910 laid on the table of the House •of Representatives. Exclusive of natives, the total population for 1916 is 1,099,499, as against 1,008,468 fot 1911. But, while tho population ol the North. Island shows a considerable increase—from 563,733 in 1911 to 6-31,072 in 1915 —that of the South Island shows only a very slight increase, tho figures for tho two census years being respectively 444,735 and 4-18,377. As might have been expected, the surplus of males over females is less marked in this census than in that taken in pre-war times, the figures being—l9Xl, males 531,910, females 476,558; 1916, males 551,775, females 547,674. Tho -Maori population is given as 49,771 ; the population of the Cook Islands and other annexed Paciiio islands as 12,797; the Maoris at Chatham Islands number only fivetwo males and throe females; and the number of members of the Expeditionary Force and Now Zealand civilians in Samoa is 271. In 1906, the counties had a population of 458,797 as against 424,614 for the boroughs; whereas in. 1911 the balance was the other way, the counties having a population of 496,779, ns compared with 505,598 for the boroughs; and that this drift from the country to the towns is still going on is shown by tho fact that for 1910 the country population is 504,104, as against a borough population of 582,461, tho borough majority having thus been increased from 8819 in 1911 to no less than 78,357 in 1916. The increase in the European population of the Dominion is 90,981; and that increase is distributed as follows in the several provincial districts: Aucldand, 44,342; Taranaki, 4356; Hawke's Bay, 5731; Wellington, 33,020; Marlborough, 623; Nelson, 5212 (decrease); Westland, 212 (decrease); Canterbury, 8426; Otago, 17. 'Hie Otago portion of the Otago province has decreased in population by 884, while the Southland portion has increased by 901, making, as stated, a net increase of 17.

Tho population of Auckland city and suburbs is 133,712 (1911, 102,676); Wellington city and suburbs, 95,235 (1911, 70,729); Christchurch city and suburbs. 92,733 (1911, 80,193); Dunedin city and suburbs, 68,716 (1911, 64,237). The following table shows the changes in population (exclusive of Maoris) in the various electoral districts during tho census period;

•The difference between this total and that of the Dominion shown in other tables is made up by the population of Chatham Islands County (which is in no electoral district), and persons on trains or in military and internment camps on the census night.
