Mr 11. W. Duckworth, purser of the Monowai, has signed off tho vessel's articles- , , Mr W. Anderson has joined the Te Anau as assistant purser, in place of Mr L. C. Smart. . The Canterbury Co.'s steamer Calm is now expected to reach Wellington to-morrow morning Irom southern ports, and is to sail to-morrow night for Wanganui. Cathie, Dempster and Co. advise that tho coastal steamer Wool ton is duo back at Wellington on .Sunday with a full load of produce from Lyttelton. Tho subsequent improvements of the vessel arc uncertain.

Owing to a mishap to her winch tho coastal steamer Warnui was unable to leave Wellington last night for. Blenheim. The vessel is now fixed to sail this evening. The Canterbury Co.’s steamer Breeze will now not arrive back at Wellington until to-morrow morning from Wanganui. Tho vessel is to sail in the evening for southern ports. Mr R. J. The Anchor Co.’s steamer Alexander is now not expected to arrive at Wellington until to-morrow morning from Wanganui. Tho vessel is fixed to leave hero ut 2 p.m. to-morrow direct for Westport and Circymouth. Thu Chatham Islands Co.’s steamer Himitangi, which arrived at Wellington yesterday afternoon from Lyttelton, is to sail on the return trip at 5 p.m. to-day. The vessel is duo back hero again on Tuesday morning. Tho Anchor Co.'s .steamer Waimea is expected al Wellington on Tuesday morning with a load of cement from Tarakohe. The vessel is to sail in the evening tor Nelson and West Coast. The locality where tho refloated barque was in difficulties at Poncarrow head was visited by the Union Co.'s tug Terawhiti yesterday, for the purpose of taking photographs. Tho pictures are to bo used in a claim for salvage by the Union Co. Captain Appleyord left Wellington by the Monowai last evening for Auckland, for orders.

The Defender, which is undergoing repairs at Wellington, is expected to be ready for. sea in about ten days. No news has vet been received of the missing Red Punnel steamer. The fact that tho vessel is equipped with wireless has added to tho owners’ anxiety, as no message has been reported from her. It is possible that the steamer John will arrive at Wellington on Monday morning from Timnru. and will sail in the evening for Wanganui. Captain G. T. Hull is advertising for a third engineer for the Putiki.

Mr Wilson, formerly of the steamer Awahou, is to join the Putiki ns mate. Tho Komata is now timed to sail from Wellington to-morrow for Westport. The Union Company advise that the Poherua was to have left Westport at midnight last night with ooal and timber for Wellington. Tho Auckland Harbour Board haying sent a circular letter to the various local shipping agents regarding the employment of Germans on vessels working tho port of Auckland, the companies replied that they had ceased to givo work to men whom they knew to be Germans, and as far as they were aware no Germans were now employed. In his report for the month of June, Captain H. H. Sergeant (harbourmaster at Auckland) states that the arrivals consisted of 416 vessels, of 179,886 gross tons) and 107,301 net tons. As compared with the corresponding period for Inst year these returns show a decrease of 63 vessels, of 61,266 gross tons and 36,011 not tons, of which the local coasters show a decrease of 57 vessels and the largo shipping a decrease of six vessels.

DREDGING AT AUCKLAND. The engineer reported to the Auckland Harbour Board on Tuesday that tho dredge Hapai had almost completed work on tho eastern side of the central wharf, and was then to be laid up for overhaul. To the central wharf itself little remained to be done. Notwithstandiug weather conditions, tho northern embankment had made rapid progress. Only about 200 feet of the blue-stone bank remained to be done in tho shallow end, and tho other work was following this up rapidly. A telegram from Takomnru Bay reports that tho Blackball Co.'s steamer Ngakuta was to have left there at midnight last night for Wellington, where she is due at daybreak to-morrow. After jiiutting out 1600 tons of coal, remainder of cargo from Greymouth, the vessel vill pail on Monday evening for Greymouth. THE HINEMOA. The Marino Department received advice that the Government steamer Hineinoa landed stores yesterday at the lighthouses at Stephen Island and French Pass. The vessel then proceeded on to Farewell Spit lighthouse, and if the .weather be favourable she will go on to Kahurangi Point. A DENIAL. Captain P. A. Petersen, representative at Wellington for Richardson and Co., Napier, gives an emphatic denial to a published statement that on Monday at tho auction of the steamer Putiki he made a late bid of 3000 for tho vessel. The highest bid he made before the vessel was sold was £3350, which was on behalf of Richardson and Co. There was, however, a late bid- of £5350—£50 above tho closing price, but no one made any higher offer.
