A triangular dispute that has extended ov'or several years, and has involved the Palmerston Borough Council, the Paver Board and the Department of Public Works, has at length been brought to a satisfactory inclusion (states the Palmerston , North “Standard”). When the Diver Board was formed four or five years ago, the Borough Council had on hand £SOO worth of piles, relics of an extensive river protection scheme undertaken in tho late Mr Essex’s mayoralty, at a cost of £BOOO. half of which was a Government subsidy. This timber, was taken over bv the River Board, and resulted in protracted litigation. Eventually the River Board had to pay the council for tho piles. Then it was tho Public Works Department’s turn, and it lodged a claim agninstitho council for £262, half the value of the timber, basing its claim on the £1 for £1 subsidy originally given by the Government for tho protection works. After lengthy negotiations, involving several interviews between the Minister and the Under-Secretary for Public Works and the Mayor, a settlement has been reached. The department, while it would not recede from the position it originally took up, wrote to tho council stating that considering all the circumstances, the Minister was prepared to take £IOO in settlement of the department’s claim of £262. This offer has been accepted by the council.
