U.S.S. COMPANY’S APPEALS

OFFICERS AND ENGINEERS EXEMPTED.

NEAT POINT MADE BY CAPTAIN WALKER.

The First Wellington Military Service Board—Messrs D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), D. McLaren, and W, Perry, with Captain Walker (military representative)—sat again at Parliament Buildings yesterday, when appeals m respect of ten ships' officers and sixteen marine engineers were lodged by Mr w. A. Kennedy (manager ot the Union Steam Ship Company, Wellington). With regard to the engineers cases Captain Walker suggested that the same ‘principle as had been laid down with respect to firemen and seamen—namely, that at least twelve months' sea sorvice prior to th© passing of tn© Milltary Service Act must ho proved—should apply to engineers. He asked Mr Kennedy if he could urge any good reason against that suggestion. Mr Kennedy replied that ho could not. Ho thought the suggestion a very fair one. Four of th© cases which did not comply with this condition were dismissed. The other appeals were adjourned indefinitely, subject to the usual proviso. APPEAL DISMISSED. Mr A. H. Hindmarsh, who appeared in support of the appeal of' H. S. Smith (transport steward, Wellington), produced the following letter from ithie stores superintendent to the Union Steam Ship Company; —"I have noticed the appeal of a young fellow, a steward of ours named H. S. Smith, who was on a transport and had to come ashore on account of the ballot. I understand he is going before the Appeal Board today to have his appeal further heard. Smith is a very good steward; and, as stewards of all kinds, both good and bad, arc very scarce, we would be very pleased to employ Smith immediately if he is exempted from military service. The is due hero in , and I anticipate meeting with a good deal of trouble finding a new staff for her, which numbers about 35, as there is generally a clean sweep out of this vessel after her arrival."

Tho case was dismissed, with leave till July 24th.
