AUSTRALIA'S CONTRIBUTION. The official return compiled by the Defence authorities shows that from the beginning of the war to April 30th, 1917, Australia has contributed to the war no lo.vor tnan 361,049 men. While all the States have sent forward many men, the best response has been from Western Australia, where 9.16 per cent, of the entire population has enlisted. In New South Wales the percentage of recruits is higher than is indicates by the figures supplied. This is accounted for bv the fact that tho recruits from Broken Hill are included in the South Australian total, and Riverina is In the Victorian military district, while those from the Northern Rivers go to the Queensland military district. Of tho total number of male persons of all ages in Australia, according to the census in 1914, 14.18 per cent, has enlisted. The contributions of the voriou* military districts are as follow:
In tiro above table New South Wales ig credited with the recruits enlisted in its military district only, whilst tho figures in the lost column are the percentages of the whole State. Thus, New South Wales recruits help to increase the nercentages of Victoria, Queensland. and South Australia. The figures fox the mother State suffer correspondingly.
