Tho “Southland Times” contains th« following particulars concerning the determined effort to escape made on Monday by a prisoner named Edward Alfred Walsh, aged 23 ypars, who was recently transferred from Wellington to Invercargill to serve a sentence of three years’ reformative treatment for theft. It seems that the man was, with other prisoners, working at the reclamation area, about 500 yards north of the Otatara ‘ embankment. About 8.10 a.m. the prisoner was given permission to go to a convenience at the rear of the working party, and he took advantage of this and made a dash to escape, attempting to cross a channel of water about a chain in width. Principal Warder Dickinson, observing the move, sent Warder Douglas in pursuit, and the latter called on Walsh to stop, but the prisoner paid no heed, and succeeded in crossing the channel. Warder Douglas again called on the prisoner to halt, but the only reply Jie received was a defiant laugh, and the escapee continued his course in the direction of Otatara. The warder then fired low with his revolver, the bullet striking the water behind the prisoner, ricocheting, and finally entering his right hip. It was seen that the man was seriously wounded, and he was removed to the Southland Hospital. On an examination being made by Dr Stanley Brown, it was found that tho bullet had worked upwards and had lodged in the bowels, and an operation was rendered necessary. Attempts to extract the bullet failed, and the man gradually sank, and died at 6.40 on Monday evening. The Toronto Humane Society is having t special medal struck for presentation to Bobs, a fine collie, who has served eight months in the trenches with his master, a private in the “Princess Pats,” both bavins' been wounded and treated in the same hospital.
