SATURDAY’S STORM

CLEANING UP THE DEBRIS. The result of the very heavy downpour on Saturday was plainly noticeable everywhere yesterday, and City Council employees were busily engaged in clearing away the silt and debris that had been left on the roads. On Grafton road, leading round from Hataitai to Roseneabh, there was also a good deal of debris, and good progress was made with clearing it away. On the Hutt road, where the silt came down in large quantities, a gang of men with three drays cleared tho roadway in the vicinity of Ngahauranga. A ‘‘gang of men was employed all day in Island Bay clearing away the loose metal which had gathered at all the street corners. In some, of the streets all tho top dressing had been washed away, just leaving tho bare stones. The City Council employees have had a busy time restoring affairs to normal, but the engineer’s department is hopeful that tho necessary work in this direction will be completed by tonight.
