STEAMER ABANDONED
VALUABLE CARGO ON EIRE. CREW ESCAPES IN THE BOATS. Press Association. AUCKLAND. Juno 18. The Union Steam Ship Company’s steamer Waitotara (471/ haa been abandoned bv her crew. She is on fire. The vessel is loaded with cargo from the Pacific coast of America. Relief steamers are being sent out. DUNEDIN. June 18. Regarding the lost Waitotara, the captain decided to abandon tbo steamer when about 200 miles from land, owing to fire in her cargo of copra and oils. The cargo represents a value of over a. quarter of a million. The crew numbers forty, and it is understood her boats arc well provisioned. It is anticipated that if wind and weather are reasonably favourable the Waitotara's crew will he able to make land in two or three days.
