Is a vessel which answers a wireless call for assistance entitled to remuneration? This question has been raised in connection with a Japanese steamer. In August, 1915, a British steamer went ashore in Bramble Cay, near Torres Straits, and her master sent a wireless to the harbourmaster, Thursday Island, to the effect that the, steamer was ashore and was resting quietly on a ; sand bank. Later on the same day he wired "Assistance at once, ship making water." The Japanese boat arrived at Goode Island and took on board a Lloyd’s surveyor and a pilot, and when the stranded steamer was reached it was found that tho captain had no intention of abandoning his vessel, whereupon the Japanese steamer proceed on her voyage. The stranded vessel was ultimately floated, and the Japanese ownerh claimed payment for tho following expenses, at the same time stating that they considered that the roaster and crew should also be remunerated for their service : Cost of cable, JEI9 15s 6d: pilotage from Goode Island to Bramble Cay, JJICO; extra coal, 63 tons at 16s aid, X 55 19s 2d; deviation and loss of time, 2 days at 1300 yen per dav—3ooo ven at 2s ltd, .£3lB 13s. Tho Ancient Mariners of Victoria played a prominent part recently in assisting to swell the receipts at Melbourne on Sailors' Day. and their representation of the sailing ship Marco Polo attracted considerable attention. Another vessel, the Nancy Lee, was moored in a snug harbour near the Town Hall entrance, and the lady “passengers” had a busy time disposing of tho “cargo” to the purchasing public. The Marco Polo, after which the Ancient Mariners named their “ship" was a well-known passenger ship which came to Victoria in the early "fifties.” A sledge stated to have been used by Captain Scott in the Antarctic, and “brought back by tho relief party in 1917,” attracted much attention. Another interesting display made by the British and Foreign fvnilors’ Society, showed tho manner in which diving operations nro carried out. tho outfit being supplied by the Melbourne Harbour Trust. AN UNCHARTED ROCK. Captain Bollous. of tho Government steamer Hinomoa, reports having located an uncharted rocq at the south entrance to Mercury Bay, which was reported first by the captain of tho steamer Greyhound about five months ago. As there isl only Bft of-water on the rock at low water springs it constitutes a menace to shipping. The rock is situated about the middle of the approach to Wigmore’s Passage from seaward. The rock measures 50ft east and west, and 40ft north and south, with an irregular surface, free from kelp, and stands in 12 fathoms of water.
