MEETING OP THE BOARD. MINISTER'S DESIRE) TO APPOINT TEACHERS, The monthlv meeting of the Board of College Governors was held yesterday morning. Those present were:—The Ucn. J. G. W. Aitken (chairman). Professor T. H. Eastcrficid and Messrs W. it. V. ' Barber, W. ii. Field, and A. Warburton. A. statement of the hoard's finances showed that there was a credit balance at the bank amounting to .£2353 11s 3d. The cash in hand totalled £!)4 Is 7d, which brought the cash credit balance to ,£2417 12s 10J. The expenditure for tiie month accounted for ,£l4lO 13s Bd, of which sum the Boys’ College absorbed £B9B 3s 4d, and the Girls’ College £542 IPs Id. Tbs sum of ,£1469 3s 4d was outstanding uj fees. Of the £2865 9s 4d that was yet bo come in. ,£2743 6s Sd was due from the Government for free place pupils. The rents outstanding were shown at £997 8s 6d. Tho question of finding accommodation for free place pupils was mentioned, and a draft of a letter that is to be forwarded to the Minister for Education was read. In this it was pointed out that each year the board had difficulty in accommodating free place pupils and admission had to be refused to a number on that account. The chairman said it would ho remembered that the board had approached the Government and asked that an addition to the Girls’ College he built to provide tbo extra accommodation that was required, but the Government would not face the necessary expenditure. The question of renting premises was thenplaced before the Minister. A building that could be made suitable could be rented lor £3OO per annum, and the Minister in his reply to the board agreed lo pay £IOO towards the rent, provided the following stipulations were carried out: —TIJ That the board rindertake to teach a course of domestic instruction : (2) that the Minister for Education have the ri;Jit of appointment of n’l teachers. . In respect to the first stinulation, the chairman said that a course of domestic instruction was taught at the Girls School, and in regard to the second the board had informed the Minister tha-t they could’ not agree to the proposal, which was a most unheard-of one. On receipt of the protest the Minister agreed }:o contribute £l6O towards .the rent without insisting upon the stipulations. Mr Field said that if the Government ■were to insist upon the stipulations mentioned the board’s functions would cease and it would be better to ahow the Government to taKo over the man.agement of the schools. A letter was received from the. Director of Education stating that it was advisable that domestic training, should bo undertaken in all secondary schools for girls. He stated that the initiation of such training should be capied out by the school authorities and not by the department. The chairman said that a class for domestic instruction had been established at the girls’ school long before the department moved in the matter. . , The purchase ol a measuring _ and weighing machine at a cost of £7 10s for the Boys’ College was agreed to. It was decided to grant Messrs G. vV. Morice and P. O. Ongley. two college masters who had joined the forces ns officers. £2O each towards their equipinent* Mr Field asked if the hoard made up the difference in their salaries, and was informed by Mr Aitken that the board had done .so in cases of masters who had enlisted In the case of officers a £2O grant was also given, and those who joined as privates had thj difference in, pay made up to them. Mr Harrier remarsed that the payment of £2O to an officer in addition tomaking up his pay was probably less expensive to the board than was the making up of the difference in pay to a private. Account* amounting to .£1440 13s od were passed for payment.
