MILITARY APPEARS. CASES BEFORE THE BOARD YESTERDAY. The third Military Service Board re-' Burned its sittings in 'Wellington yesterday. Mr W. H. S. Moor ho use presided and had associated with him Messrs M. S. Mack and A. 0. Considine. Captain Baldwin appeared as military representative. FIREMEN’S APPEALS. Mr W. T. Young, secretary of the Federated Seamen’s Onion, appealed on behalf of the following firemen ;—William Brailey, Basil Brown, Charles Lyons, Edward Ernest Colclough, Peter Crosby, John Campbell, Wm. McLaclilan (all of Wellington), William, Alfred Farrow (Lyttelton), Alexander Taylor (Nelson), John Miller (Lyttelton), Robert Murphy (Auckland); also James Kelly, able seaman, of Wellington. The appeal in respect to Farrow was dismissed, as his whereabouts are unknown, jjdiile that in regard to Brailey was withdrawn. After Mr Young had detailed the facts regarding the employment of each appellant, the board intimated that temporary exemption would be granted on the usual terms. A MAORI’S APPEAL. Mr George Hutcheson appealed on behalf of Tarana Eruera Sutherland on che ground that being a Maori Sutherland was not in the reserve. Counsel stated that his client was by no means a shirker, and had been a member of the Maori Contingent which had since Been discharged. His father had died some time before, leaving an estate worth <£50.000 and appellant was at present interested in the division of this fcStHtb. The appeal was adjourned sine die. EEHEARINGS. The appeal of Denis James Casey, plumber, was reheard. On his behalf Mr J. Scott asked for exemption for two months. One month’s leave was recommended by the board. Application for a rehearing of appeal was made in respect to Sydney Clark, labourer, of Lower Hutt, who produced a birth certificate showing he was over 45 years of age. The appeal was allowed. The appeal of H. W. Ferrar, cashier for the Wellington Meat Export Co., was reopened, and after hearing evidence in respect to appellant’s claim of undue hardship the board reserved its decision. The board resumes at 2.15 p.m. on Tuesday next.
