AN ANCIENT WHALER. The ancient whaling barque John and WlntJhrop, one of the type that Jack London and other writers ot sea tales liked: to tell about, has been dug out of the'-. East .Oakland. :boneyord and towed into the Hanlon dry dock to he fitted -for sea’ service. Tho John and Winthrop is forty-two years old, but has had such a hard life that she looks twice as old. For years she sailed between San Francisco and Alaska/ where she was engaged in. the Whaling industry. The whaler, while picturesque, was 'never noted for her graceful lines or tidy appearance, and years before she. was. relegated to the. boueyaid it looked as though her usefulness was ended. Finally the Federal inspectors of hulls and boilers sent the old whaler to tho scrap heap four or five years ago, and since that time she had sunk deep into the mud. The John and Wiiithrop, now owned by M. H. Taylor, of San Francisco, was built in Bath. Me., in 1878 for H. J. Knowles, of San Francisco. She will be entirely refitted at the Hanlon shipyards and will again resume a career as n whaler in the regions north of 53. This is the last of tho cripples from the boneyard that could possibly be fixed up as a carrying bottom.

TUTANEKAI RETURNS. After another fortnight’s ■ absence the Government cable-repair steamer Tulanekai returned.' to Wellington at midday yesterday from Cloudy Bay, where' she lias been engaged in what- has-prov-ed a. fruitless endeavour to find ' the White's Bay ~ broken end of the cable No. 4 from Lyall Bay. It seems as though the cable has become deeply embedded'in the bottom, as the grapnel failed to locate it. Ever since the TuI'toliekar left Wellington about a fort-, night ago she has boon, with few exceptions, daily engaged dragging for the cable, leaving Port Underwood some, rfitnes at 5 o’clock itf the morning 'and returning to- that port frequently as ; late as 6 or 7 - o’clock in the evening. The Lyall Bay end of the cable is safely buoyed, but the other end defies discovery. A few days of south-easterly weather prevented operations, and at times the tides also proved unsuitable. "The future movements of tho Tutanekai are'ndt de'fihitely settled;'but it isT'posj.ible that a uew length of cable will have to be laid down in place of the missing section. At all events the vessel will remain in port for some days.
