theft from hotel. Before Mr L. G, Reid. S.M., in ■ idle Magistrate's Court j-esterday. Charles Talker, a young man, appeared on a charge of stealing on November 33th last jewellery valued at .£36 ss, the property of Phyllis E- 'St. Hill, from the Empire Hotel. Detective Carney, who aricsted accused at Plimmerton, produced a statement signed by Walter to the effect that at the time of the offence be was employed at the Empire Hotel. He had been asked to take a parcel up to Miss St. Hill's room and while there impropriated a jewel case which was lying on the table. He had disposed of the jewellery it contained to i sec ond-hand dealer. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. TOTING GUNNER’S LAPSE. A young soldier, _ Ernest Samuel. French, admitted stealing-' some , hrask bearings valued at .113, the property the Defence Department. Detective. Sergeant Cox explained that accused had been stationed for the last six months at Fort Dorset. Some brass bearings were missed from there and when questioned about the matter accused admitted he had stolen them and sold them to a dealer for 17s Gd. Accused had previously borne a good character. A fine of £2 was imposed and accused was ordered to pay <£l 3s Gd .to make up for the value of the hearings. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. A man in uniform named Albert Saunders pleaded not guilty to a charge
of stealing a soldier's overcoat valued at .£3 2s 6d, the" property of the Now Zealand Government; Saunders said the coat had been taken by him in mistake from a hotel, but His Worship was convinced to 1 tho contmrv 1 and’ fined him 4-Os. in default seven days in guol. A tottering old man of 82 years, Ccsarl ,Pierotti, admitted a charge of .indecency in a public place. He was convicted and discharged. . , A sentence of two months'.imprisonment was imposed on Eva' Grell, found guilty of loitering in the streets for tho purpose of prostitution. Percy Erickson -was - further remanded to April 4th on four theft chargee. A middle-aged,, wan .named .Arthur Henry Woods was charged with indecently assaulting a little girl of four years and nine months. After hearing the evidence accused pleaded not .guilty and was committed to the .Supreme Court for trial. ,
