MILITARY APPEAL BOARD

OASES DEALT WITH YESTERDAY. The Third Military Service Board sat again yesterday at the Parliamentary Buildings. The board comprised Messrs W. H. S, Moorhouse (chairman), A. o’’L; Gonsidine and M. J. Mack. Captain Baldwin appeared on behalf of the military authorities.

The following cases were adjourned until May Ist: —Leslie Baker, locomotive foreman, 23. Thomdon quay; Patrick Richard Ryan, signalman, 16, Murphy street; Frederick Henry Cunningham, locomotive fireman, 9, George street, Masterton (employers’ appeals). The applications of Hie following clerks in the Public Trust offices at Christchurch and Wellington were adjourned until June 2nd : —Thomas John Dwyer, Peter Alexander Devereux, William George Baird, William Robert Hillier, George Miller, Walter Hambley Pearce and Arthur William Walters.

Sergeant James Hope-Ede, of the 24th Reinforcements, a voluntary recruit, applied for temporary exemption on account of the bad health of his wife. The case was ordered to stand over.

Private James Farmer, of the 25th Reinforcements, applied for temporary exemption to enable bim to dispose of stock on his farm north of Auckland. He stated that he had 300 acres, with £2OO worth of stock, including 14 milking cows and horses. He had two brothers who were voluntary recruits. Two months’ leave was arranged. The appeal of Thomas Denis Reidy, bank clerk. Manakau. was withdrawn, the applicant having been declared medically unfit for service. Private J. Jackson, a voluntary recruit, of the 25th Reinforcements, applied for temporary exemption. He stated that he had been two months in camp and had just come out of hospital suffering from nervous breakdown. His wife was in ill-health. Two months’ leave was granted. The same period was also allowed Private S. C. Jones, of the 24th Reinforcements.

Mr Xcave appeared for George Dennis, a joiner of Hamilton road, Kilbirnie, who applied for a rehearing of his case. Further evidence having been given it was decided to give the appellant two months to make arrangements for carrying on his business. In the oases of Francis H. Deverall and Alexander Matheson, shearers, there was no appearance of either appellant, and the’ appeals were dismissin regard to six engineers employed by the T T nion Steam Ship Company, Mr W. A. Kennedy, the manager of the company, stated that later on ho would be in a. position to state which men could be most. readily spared. The cases were accordingly adjourned until April 16th. The board adjourned until Friday.
