KEIFLY TO STATEMENT BY A MINISTER. Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 27. Tho-Acting-Di rector of the Otago University Dental School, replying to statements by the Hon. G. W. Russell, published on Saturday, says that during the last six yours .33 men presented" themselves for examination under the Acts of 1910-11. The Dentists Act was opened to admit these men, who otherwise would have had to pass through college. This deprived tho college of a largo number of students. Fifteen find obtained the degree of U.D.S. in tho last six years, and two men obtained registration by reason of British qualifications. This explains where the 49 new dentists starting in Now Zealand in tho last six years came from, not, as the Minister said, from American colleges. The acting-director cites instances in refutation of the statement that the method of training dentists in Now Zealand had proved a colossal failureAs a remedy for the shortage of students the acting-director says tho remedy is to make available to dental students bursaries such as are proposed to be given tho medical students or such as are proposed to be given to homo science students and teacher-stu-dents attending a training college.
