LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OP BOROUGH COUNCIL. . A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr Baldwin) .presiding. There were also present: Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Heron,. Clendon, Brussel, Carver, Meldrum,, and Hodgins. The engineer reported that practically the whole of the staff had been engaged on the work of sewerage and surface water connections for the last fortnight. Six sewer connections and four surface water connections were put through. Pive connections had been made with the gas mains, making the total to date 614, also two water connections, making a total of 1042. The report was adopted. A deputation of Normandale residents waited on the council with the request that a path be made to replace the steps near the wattle track on the Normandale road, and the locality properly lighted. The steps at present, the speakers said, were an abomination. The Mayor said the council could pot make any definite promise, but the matter would receive consideration. Later on in the evening the matter was referred to a committee.
The secretary of the Hutt Park Committee wrote asking whether the council would be prepared to accept dedication of a strip of land approximately 15 feet .wide along the Eandwick road frontage .of the park for the widening of that road. —The matter was referred to the engineer for a report. It was decided to take no action in regard to a request hy Mr P. H. Smith for assistance in the construction of a culvert for the purpose of conveying the creek water through his property and that of other owners.
The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a “Gazette” notice relative to the commemoration of Anzac Day, April 23rd. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote asking if the Borough Council would exclude the Hall-Jones settlement, on which it was proposed to settle discharged soldiers, from the bor. ough area. It was decided that this could not bo done, on the ground that the land was pledged for loans. In regard to a letter from the Nations al Efficiency Board, in reference to the employment of men and women with the view of releasing Second Division men for military service, it was decided to procure a report on the subject.
