SCHOOL COMMITTEES
WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION MEETS. A meeting of the Wellington School Committees' Association was held last night. Mr J. P. Shand presided.' Mr H. A. White, of the Brooklyn Echool committee, read a paper on the question of free school hooks. The present education system could not be considered free while parents had to pay for their children’s books. These should be provided free by the Government. Members expressed themselves strongly in favour of the views given by Mr White, and after some discussion it was decided that tho matter bo fully discussed by various school committees, along with tho standardisation of school books.
The matter of taking steps to bring about on improvement in school children’s writing was brought before the meeting by the Kilbirnie School Committee. After a short discussion the matter was deferred for further inquiry. A report was received from the chairman relative to the subcommittee set up to interview school committees with a view to endeavouring to secure theirjsooperation by joining the association. The committee’s efforts had been successful in this respect.
